A trip to prison

by Brittany Geragotelis

So, last weekend, I went to prison. Yes, you read that right. But it's not what you think, I swear. See, my friend Tammy and I are sort of into the paranormal, and she's a HUGE fan of ghost-hunting shows like "Ghost Hunters" and "Paranormal State." So, for almost all of her birthdays since I've known her, I take her on a ghost-hunting excursion. We've stayed overnight at haunted hotels and visited Sleepy Hollow.

This year, I took her to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia.

ESP is one of the first modern prisons in the country--and is also said to be one of the most haunted. It was because of this that we headed out on a chilly Saturday, drove 2+ hours and braved the crumbling ruins of this former prison. And we were not disappointed. Although none of us saw any ghosts (it was the middle of the day and about a hundred others were milling around), the place was rich in history and would make the perfect scene for a horror film.

will share one story with you though...I'd just started walking down one of the cellblocks, when a thick, wooden door came off its hinges and fell onto a guy who was walking by. Luckily, the man wasn't hurt (he'd seen it as it began to fall, and was able to catch it in time), but he was clearly startled. We all were. Then, we shared an uncomfortable laugh as he pushed it back up and against its frame.

Do with that what you will. I know what I think happened.....

Hope you enjoy the pics!

This guy was waiting for us at the entrance to the prison.

An un-staged cell

Is that a spirit orb I see in the top left corner?

Yeah. I thought this was weird, too.
This branch was growing IN the cell.

Kinda pretty for death row.
Is that blood on that plastic sheet? Found it in the greenhouse on the grounds.
This was the door that fell on the guy.
Apparently a barber chair, but looks more like a torture device.

I've never seen someone so happy to be in prison.
