The Intern Diaries #2: Boston, Journey & Witches

by Rose Kahn

Boston, is the perfect state of grace.”

So much has happened these last few weeks my head is spinning. All the things we were doing to promote What The Spell was so exciting—until the Boston tragedy occurred. I have family in Boston and have visited a few times, and have fallen in love with it. It’s a unique city with a long history. It’s not just a capital, not just a place. Boston, President Obama quoted, “is the perfect state of grace.” It is where the American Revolution began and as a New Yorker, where we have our biggest rivals (The Red Sox). But on that Monday we weren’t rivals anymore, we were all Americans, all human beings that were trying to overcome the darkness with good. The photos and stories of individuals lending helping hands really warmed my heart, and reaffirmed my belief in the goodness of mankind. Brittany was so kind as to check up on me and make sure I was dealing with tragedy okay. I told her it was awful and hurt my spirit, but that the best revenge is to be kinder, friendlier, more helpful, stronger and to go on living your life with gusto. Like 8-year-old Martin said (on a class project for school prior to tragically losing his life in the Boston bombing): “No more hurting people. Peace!” #BostonStrong

“Don’t stop believin’!” –Journey

With that said, I’ve now turned my attention back to my intern duties with that same gusto. I need to catch you guys and gals up (like my own version of the water cooler) on what’s been happening on the publishing front! First is that What the Spell was on one of my favorite shows… “GLEE”! I was so excited when I heard the news that Brittany’s book would make a cameo in an episode titled “Guilty Pleasures.” I was literally jumping up and down. I mean, I sing all their songs all the time, in the shower, on the train (sorry homeless man on Canal Street)… I was just so excited and happy for Brittany. I truly think the book was a perfect fit for the show, as it portrays very similar themes. From Brooklyn’s deep need to fit in and her journey to love and accept her true self, these are the same ideas “Glee” touches on in each episode—complete with a Journey song in the background! They deal with body image, bullying and self acceptance. These are all issues that most young people deal with.

That night I sat on the edge of my fold out chair and did something I haven’t done in over three years: watched a live episode of TV, all the while texting Brittany every 10 seconds (sorry so annoying!) [EDITOR’S NOTE: Not annoying at all.] We finally saw a glimpse of the book when Tina Cohen-Chang held it in the macaroni art scene! As an avid macaroni artist back in summer camp in Staten Island, I totally appreciated the reference. But back to Tina holding What the Spell! When I saw it, I screamed in my Brooklyn apartment (half expecting someone to lean out of their window and yell, “Shut Up!”) and then quickly texted Brittany like a mad woman. All I could think about was that it had made it on “Glee!”

I watched the episode closely after that, searching for more cameos, and though there were others, they were less noticeable. Still, I was floating on air. I loved the rest of the episode and laughed through everyone’s guilty pleasures especially the Spice Girls moment. (“Oh tell me what you want, what you really really want…” hello 7th grade!) After Brittany found the perfect screen capture and we sent it along to an awesome Glee fansite, Glee-Fans.Org, we felt elated. Don’t stop believing, kids!

“Love is never having to say you’re sorry.” --Love Story

So spring doesn’t just come with cherry blossoms and iced lattes (my addiction!), but holidays like Passover and Easter and fun events like book signings and WEDDINGS! Passover came and went, and for this “Jewish American Princess,” that meant I got to hang out with my whole loud, Jewish family, for a fun-filled 10 days that will be repeatedly retold to my therapist for years to come. The fun part was giving my sisters and nieces Brittany’s books to read, and then discussing and comparing notes. There were fights over who would read what first. My 15-year-old niece got first choice because she’s kind of awesome and will be a kick-ass lawyer one day (you go V!). She picked Life’s a Witch, (yup, Brittany gave me an advance copy, one of the perks of an unpaid intern. How do I afford the lattes you might ask…. …shhh…it’s magic ;) and she loved it!

One of my sisters got What the Spell, and she thought it was adorable. She loved the high school setting, Brooklyn, and everything about it. They switched books and the rotation continued. My older sisters loved Life’s A Witch for its retelling of the Salem witch trials and the rest of my family just loved the books for the very fact that Brittany has worked so hard and come so far. They commended her for her resilience and perseverance and will read anything she writes from here on out.

After Passover (all that matza) and Easter (yes, I did buy a dozen chocolate bunnies on sale at Duane Read!) came Brittany’s wedding! She looked stunning! At first I thought that getting married at Disney World meant Mickey and Minnie came to your wedding (a little scary). But when I actually saw what her wedding was like, it made me want to change my mind about my own dream location (See, I’ve wanted to get married at the Plaza Hotel since I started planning my special day when I was 12 with my first wedding planner scrapbook—now a Pinterest board. Yes boys, girls really do this.).

Britt’s wedding pictures came flowing in and I gasped after each one. She looked like a princess, and Matt, her prince. This was a magical day for her indeed. From the gown to the ceremony, and the party favors of carved-out books to the wedding cake of books stacked on top of each other, the event looked magnificent—everything the bride and groom deserved. The love and warmth emanated through the photos and filled my heart with joy. (Getting mushy I know, it’s been a tough week y’all, let me have it.)

“Please do not feed the intern! She is on a strict diet of snark and sarcasm.

When Brittany and Matt came back from their honeymoon all tanned and with perma-smiles plastered on their faces, we attended a book reading/signing Brittany did at Books of Wonder. BOW is a fabulous independent bookstore in Manhattan’s Flatiron district (home of my favorite building). The store has book readings and a café inside with the best barstools (yes, I tested them out). Brittany and four other authors (Alaya Dawn Johnson, Jesse Karp, Nova Ren Suma and Suzzane Weyn) attended the Supernatural Young Adult reading together. They each took their seats at a long table and proceeded to wait for the bookish New Yorkers to fill the room. The authors’ magical stories varied from themes like an Amazonian dystopian future and ritual sacrifices to a girl who can see other missing girls in her dreams.

Then Brittany began to read her excerpt and I was riveted. It was the scene where Brooklyn and Asher first kiss; it was so fun and lovely to hear out loud from the creator herself. The audience gasped and cheered because they too could feel the magic of young love. It was short and brilliant and the crowd loved it. All the authors read their excerpts and then opened the floor to questions. Brittany had some fantastic answers about the writing process and how she found new avenues to get her writing out to the public.

They also discussed how they come up with ideas and what inspires them. Jesse Karp explained that he starts to think about “what if’s.” “What if everyone forgot I existed?” “What if my parents forgot me?” It was then that I wondered whether Jesse had read my 7th grade diary and began to panic over where I’d hid it all those years ago.

Brittany explained that she drew inspiration from stories that she loved, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She enjoyed how the magical and the mundane come together to make an extraordinary tale that is also relatable to everyone.

When the question segment ended they then proceed to sign books and I wanted them all. Being an intern and living in a big city, budgets are a necessary evil, so I could only choose one al la Sophie’s Choice. After some legit nail biting agony, I chose 17 and Gone, the mystery of missing teens intrigued me, as I often fantasized about running away when I was younger in order to get some quiet from my five siblings. The author signed my copy for me, and I added it to my growing collection of signed books currently piled on my bedroom floor. Brittany, her husband Matt, her publicist Siena (who is awesome, btw!) and myself finished our venti lattes and then proceeded to use all our leftover enthusiasm and adrenaline to go shopping (or it could have just been me.) It was a great event and a wonderful turnout. You should all come to the next one!

It was a fun (yet somber) filled four weeks of family, wedded bliss and books galore. I could not ask for more. So much more to share, but you’re going to have to hang tight guys and gals—because the intern will return with more lattes, scoops and pop cultured-laced anecdotes about Brittany’s zany adventures. Until next time!

Cheers,

Rose

The Intern Diaries: Meet Rose!

by Rose Kahn
Meet Brittany's new intern: Rose Kahn!

The reason one writes isn't the fact he wants to say something. He writes because he has something to say.”
--F. Scott Fitzgerald

Hi everyone!

My name is Rose Kahn and I’m Brittany’s new intern. I wanted to introduce myself to the Brittany fan world:

A) because Brittany asked me to, and
B) because you guys are seriously some of the best fans ever!

When Brittany first asked me to write this post I panicked. What would I say? Would people be interested? I know sometimes my thoughts even bore me. It can cause problems when I’m trying to tan or meditate (makes yoga tricky sometimes). But then I took a deep breath, a yoga technique, and realized that I could just be honest with all you great readers out there. We all have a mutual love for reading and writing, so why not share that love and chat a bit. Here it goes….from the beginning.

"Luck is where the crossroads of opportunity and preparation meet." --Seneca

Just a few (too many) subway stops away from Brittany's place on the UES!
It was a nice pre-spring day in March when Brittany and I met up at her favorite Gluten Free Bakery (Pip’sPlace) on the Upper East Side.  As I came huffing and puffing off a delayed train from Brooklyn (same name as her character from What the Spell!) she greeted me with a megawatt smile and generous attitude (and cute sweat-suit outfit that I wish I could pull off). She introduced me to the entire bakery staff and then raved about their pastries for a few minutes. I was salivating over the spread but decided to be professional and order after our chat. My eyes kept wandering over to the chocolate babbka that was calling my name and I lost focus many times. When I was finally able to take my eyes off its chocolaty goodness, I got to know Brittany a little better.
Best cakery in town!
She’s seriously awesome you guys! She loves to read and write, and loves her books, characters and fans so much! She told me about how she got her start and how much work goes into achieving your dreams. She was honest about hard work, rejection and drive. When you want something bad enough, you’ll throw away your ego and make it happen. I truly believe this. You have to work hard to achieve your dreams. If you stay the course, and work your butt off you can succeed. It won’t be easy and lots of people will say no. But you have to be strong and approach it from a different angle. If one road is blocked take another route. Never give up, and never surrender. (Yes, I did just quote Braveheart. But hey if it works…)

"If the apocalypse comes, beep me!"
--Buffy Summers

Into the second hour ( we talked so long we lost track of time) we discovered our healthy (or not so healthy) obsession with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” When Brittany and I started talking about our mutual love for all things Sunnydale, our voices raised an octave or two and we began to babble about Buffy’s hair, Xanders clothing and shot quotes back and forth like teenagers (I’m sure the bakers enjoyed that). We spoke about Whedonisim (that’s Joss Whendon’s genius for all you non Buffyverse people out there) and what shows we are currently watching. We both watch “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Vampire Diaries” (hello, Ian Somerhalder!) and think teen dramas have evolved so much over the years, that individuals of all ages can enjoy them without feeling immature.
Best show EVER.
I am proud to say I love all things pop culture—but I still make sure to stay on top of what’s going on in the world. I love ENews! (Giuliana is my spirit sister) almost as much as I love CNN. I can read PerezHilton with my morning Greek yogurt and still check the NewYorkTimes.com a dozen times a day. I believe myself a post-modern feminist who can be awed by Hillary Clinton’s work as Secretary of State, but still cringe at the state of her wardrobe. I can watch Kevin Spacey’s new Netflix show House of Cards with rapt interest about the seedy underbelly of the government and give the same captivated attention to ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” (Who is “A”? Tell us already! I think its Aria, I don’t know why, I just do.).
Deliciously devious
I watch all types of movies and all kinds of television. I don’t discriminate. Good writing, good acting and good directing…I’m in. Buffy was my heroine. I looked up to her and her strength. She went through so much and came out triumphant in the end, while never forgetting her friends. She was also insecure, and although very pretty, never thought too highly of herself, but she knew that because she was a human being she deserved happiness. She deserved good friends, love and a good family. Brittany’s books display the same themes and I greatly appreciate that. We are all human beings who deserve to be happy and treated with respect and love no matter who we are or what we look like. Yay for the human race!

"Last but not least."

So, in my first week I tried downloading all the apps Brittany told me about when we should’ve been working (loved my fishtail braid tutorial), but I’m attached to my iPhone and am scared to download anything else for fear it won’t be able to hold any more of my Drake and Mumford and Sons songs. I love to read almost as much as shopping. I’ve read Twilight and The Great Gatsby, both among my favorites and peruse “Publishers’ Lunch” daily. I sometimes try on everything at Saks, then go to H&M and try to replicate my couture dreams. I get daily emails from GiltGroup and RueLaLa.com but only to buy baby gifts. I live for the organic ginger snaps at Wholefoods but die for Magnolia cupcakes. I’m a walking contradiction, but at least I’m an honest one.

Look at those arms!
I am both equally outraged and intrigued by things like “The Atlantic’s” Why Women Can’t Have it All?, and the idea that Michelle Obama’s bangs might be a mid-life crisis (They are stunning! Why all the hate?). I see equality and freedom as a choice, and I believe that freedom allows us to choose between what we want to pursue and what we each individually consider to be our biggest happiness in life. I try to keep myself abreast of all topics and not judge too harshly, be opinionated but never take myself too seriously. I believe in being young at heart but being mature in my decisions. I love all types of books and music, and hope to make an impact on the world some day, however small it may be. I’m so excited to be working with Brittany and to talk to you all every week! This is going to be such an adventure. So glad you’re all coming along for the ride!

Cheers everyone, until next week….
Rose

It's no secret I'm a Buffy fan...so, when this video was sent to me on my birthday you know I had to watch it. And even though it's a cartoon, I really wish this show would've been made. I woulda been all over it!

And to think this would have been a cartoon I actually would have enjoyed watching with my kids!

Happy Friday, enjoy!

Who Wants a Million Dollar Toilet?

by Brittany Geragotelis

When "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" went off the air several years ago, I remember being heartbroken to find out too late that the studio had auctioned off memorabilia from the show. "Buffy" was my favorite show of all time and the fact that I'd missed out on the opportunity to own a stake possibly used by Sarah Michelle Gellar (or any of the other cast members) was totally frustrating. I mean, how cool would it have been to be able to hang Mr. Pointy over my fireplace (if I had one...I live in a studio apartment in NYC, remember?)?! But needless to say, I missed the boat (or crossbow) on that one. I did, however, manage to snag myself some suspenders from the old "Sex and the City" set when that show wrapped. Have I ever worn them? No way. Will I get rid of them? Hell no.

So, when I heard that the owners of J.D. Salinger's old house in Cornish was selling off some of the house's original items used or touched by the famous author, I totally got it. Among one of the top items? A throne to fit a literary King.

That's right folks! You could be the proud owner of the toilet where the Catcher in the Rye scribe parked his hiney on a daily basis. Who knows, he may have even done some of his writing in there, too!

So how much will this keepsake cost you? A whopping $1 million dollars!

No, seriously. One. Million. Dollars. For a toilet.

Is there really anyone out there who'd spend that much money on a toilet? I mean, besides a billionaire eccentric or a museum, of course. Or is the owner of the Salinger house just kidding himself?

Personally, I'd never spend that much money on an item that's seen more booty than a Sir Mix-A-Lot video, but then again, J.D. Salinger might be someone else's "Buffy." And if that's the case, then can you really put a price on history?

What kind of keepsake would you be willing to spend a million on? Leave your must-haves below!

Wise words from "Friends"

by Brittany Geragotelis

If you know me, you know that I watch a lot of TV. Seriously, a LOT of TV. Sometimes people are shocked that I manage to find time to write books, blog, read books and have a social life while watching as much television as I do. Shows have the power to impact my mood. They have the power to inspire, the power to give us strength. They have the power to teach us lessons about life.

So, given my penchant for television watching, it's not surprising that I've learned a lot from TV shows over the years. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. "Friends": There's no such thing as an unselfish good deed. Joey said this to Phoebe and she set off on a mission to find an unselfish good deed. And what did she find? It doesn't exist. Truth is, in the end if no one even knows that you've done something good for someone/something else, you still feel good about doing it, right? That's selfish. At least it's selfish for all the right reasons.

2. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer": Leave a positive impact on the world. Sure, she kills vampires and demons and witches (Oh my!), but the idea that here's this girl who helps to save the world on a daily basis is a very attractive thought to me. I think that everyone wants to know they're on this world for a reason and that when their time is up, the world's a better place because they lived. Every day I ask myself, am I doing something that could impact the world around me in a positive way. If I'm not, I know it's time to do something about that.

3. "Veronica Mars": Take the obstacles in your life and turn them into positives. Veronica was roofied and raped at a party, her BFF was murdered and all her friends turned against her...so, what does she do? Well, she doesn't shut down or turn to mind-altering substances to help her forget it all. She gets sassy, starts working with her father at his private investigation company and makes it her mission to find out the truth about everything that turned her life upside down. Because of this, she ends up helping countless people around her, finds her friend's killer and makes lifelong friends. I find strength in characters like Veronica who don't stay down when life tosses them to the ground.

4. "Dexter": Nobody's who they seem to be. On the outside, Dexter seems like a caring brother, husband, father, friend...but on the inside, he craves violence and murder, which he lets loose on criminals that the system has failed to send to jail. Just because a person you've just met seems nice and normal and you swear they'd never hurt a fly, doesn't make it so. Er on the side of paranoid when it comes to letting your guard down too soon around strangers. Better to take your time getting to know someone than ending up the part of your own E! Hollywood Story.

5. "Glee": Everybody feels like a geek sometimes. Whether you're the pretty girl or the captain of the dork brigade it's inevitable that you're going to have at least one sucky day. A day when you're picked on, feel less than fabulous, and like life will never go your way. Some of us have more than one of these days (mine was all of high school). But the truth is, everyone's too busy just trying to survive to pay attention to your misery. In the meantime, you have to find something that makes you feel like a winner, like you belong, like you're contributing to something bigger than just how popular you are to other people.

6. "House": It's never Lupus. Except for when it is. There are millions of health problems you could have right now...brain tumor, heart murmur, Huntington's Disease, lead poisoning. These are just a handful of what could fit whatever symptoms you have right this second. And there are a million different ways we could die. But if you're lucky enough to have a nasty, angry, bitter, genius doctor like House, someone just might figure out what it is before you kick the bucket.

Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood
7. "Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood": Relationships take work—but that doesn't mean they're doomed. Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott fell in love with each other (while they were both still married to other people) and vowed never to change the way they were together. Four years and two kids later, the SO IN LOVE duo hit a rough patch and spent a few rocky months trying to get back to the way they'd been at the beginning of their relationship. But instead of shutting down completely, the couple spent time talking it out and figured out what they needed to work on as individuals, to make the relationship better. The work on their relationship paid off, because they just renewed their vows and seem to be back on track!

What have you learned from your favorite shows? Leave your comments and wisdom above!

B.
