Cheer camp with the Kardashians....

by Brittany Geragotelis

So, a week ago, I headed off to Ontario, CA, to go to The Spirit Consultants cheer camp with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Corinne Foxx. The week was long and full of screaming girls, but totally worth it, because I was able to get a really sweet segment on Access Hollywood about Kendall being on our cover in May and Corinne being our December cover girl. Yay me!

But what was SUPER exciting was that on the last day of camp, "Keeping up with the Kardashians" was filming at the camp! And get this: the whole Kardashian clan was there. Well, except for Kim. She must have been off figuring out last-minute details for her fabulous wedding, which is less than a week away! But the rest of them were there....here's the run-down:
Kris, Bruce, Mason, Kourtney, Khloe and Lamar!

The girls looked beautiful as always and I even scored some one-on-one time with Kourtney, talking to her about how she was the perfect size to be a cheerleader. She explained that there wasn't a cheer squad when Kim and her were in school, but that they took dance classes for a few weeks during that time. It turns out, Kourtney was actually a big soccer player. But she was super psyched to see Kendall and Kylie in their element.

She wasn't the only one though...Khloe was taking pictures the entire time and then later posted them on her blog. And when the girls first came out onto the floor to compete in the camp cheer contest, Lamar attempted to do a high kick. Granted with limbs as long as his (I went up to his hip), he nearly fell down in the process.

Everyone was SO nice and they were all so proud of Kendall and Kylie! You could tell that they're really a family that cheers on each other. Anyway.....here are some pics I took from the VIP section of the camp. Yep, that's right...I was in the same section as the Kardashians! They don't have a cheer magazine reality show yet...don't you think they should?

Kendall and Kylie at cheer camp!

by Brittany Geragotelis

Hey all!

As you might know, I'm at cheer camp this week...with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Corinne Foxx (Jamie Foxx's daughter)! I'm having so much fun, but don't worry--I'm doing a lot work while I'm here too! Case in point, check out the segment on Access Hollywood that I set up on Monday! Pretty amazing, huh?

My blog's gone Hollywood

by Brittany Geragotelis

I had no idea, but apparently my blog has hit Hollywood! I mean, I knew all of you read it (which is amazing as it is!), but now I have confirmation that Tinsletown (or the media that reports on Tinsletown) is taking notice of Brittany The Book Slayer.

Check out this video from CelebTV, which randomly came up in my Google alerts for Corinne Foxx. The video itself isn't bad (and they give me credit for the info and some of the pics), but they didn't even ask for permission....which is usually a no-no. But for now, I'll let it go, and share the final product with you!

Guess which celeb's house I'm hanging out at this weekend?

by Brittany Geragotelis

Before I get to the celeb-studded weekend plans, can I just mention that yesterday I reached #23 on the HOT list on Wattpad, the site where I've been publishing my book, Life's a Witch? This is the highest up I've ever been and it's no surprise that it happens to coincide with publishing the chapter where I reveal who the traitor is in the book? Have you read it yet? What did you think of the reveal? Were you surprised? Did you kinda already know? Were you happy or frustrated? Whatever you thought, be sure to leave your comments below. I'd love to hear what you think.

On to more celeb-related info...I'm about to embark on another weekend in LA for two celebrity photo shoots. The first is with new Disney It-Girl, Debby Ryan. If you have a younger sibling or child between the ages of 5 and 14 (or are an adult who just LOVES the Disney channel....hey, there's nothing wrong with that), you likely know who Debby is. If you don't, Debby spent the last three years on "The Suite Life on Deck" playing Bailey Picket, with twin cuties Dylan and Cole Sprouse. Well, this cutie-patootie just turned 18 and is starring in her own Disney show called "Jessie", debuting this fall. Disney's already toting her as the next big thing and since Miley and Selena have both moved on, it looks like there's a spot open for a new Disney Princess.

We're also shooting Corinne Fox, Jamie Fox's daughter. Now the cool thing about Corinne is that she's actually a cheerleader NOW. And if that weren't enough, she actually cheers on the same squad as Kendall Jenner (can you imagine what it's like to be on that squad?). So, we're going to spend some time with the teenager to talk to her all about her cheer experiences, as well as the fact that her dad credits her as the reason his music career is what it is today. And Corinne herself seems to have a natural talent for the music world...she's been spending a lot of time in the studio behind-the-scenes learning all there is to creating records. So for this shoot, we've been invited over to Jamie's in-home recording studio to shoot Corinne in her element. Jamie's even offered to take a few pics with Corinne for the magazine! How cool is that? I'm going to be hanging out at Jamie Fox's house this weekend! How random.

But the celebs don't stop there. We're also shooting Christa B. Allen (ABC's new show "Revenge"), Jasmine V (Sony/Epic recording artist and Justin Bieber's ex!), Bella Thorne (Disney's "Shake It Up"), Megan Park (ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager"), Ayla Kell (ABC Family's "Make It or Break It") and Sasha Pieterse (ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars). It's going to be an INSANE shoot, but I'm beyond excited to see what these girls are like in person!

I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and I'll be sure to update after the shoots!

My day with Heather Morris and Kendall Jenner...

by Brittany Geragotelis

This past weekend, I was in LA for a photo shoot we were doing for the magazine. Our cover girls? Heather Morris (plays Brittany on "Glee") and Kendall Jenner (younger sister of the famed Kardashians).

To say the weekend was exciting is an understatement. And I have the pictures to prove it. I can't give away too much scoop, because I have to save it all for the mag, but I can tell you that I got to meet Bruce Jenner (he's very tall); Kendall is super nice, ridiculously gorgeous (the girl can't take a bad picture!), towered over me and is seriously in LOVE with cheerleading; And Heather is just as funny and loveable in person as she is on the show, is a sick dancer and knew nothing about the rumors of her being the next Buffy (When I told her about the gossip, she looked genuinely shocked).

But without further ado, please enjoy some of these pics from the shoot!

Hell, yeah!

by Brittany Geragotelis

Take a look at who I'm interviewing today!!! Yep....that's miss Ashley Tisdale! I'm so excited and nervous at the same time to be talking to her again. I hope the call goes well and I'm able to get all my questions in...she's filming a movie in Vancouver and she's taking some time out of her busy shooting schedule to talk to me. Woo hoo!

Just took a look at the extended show trailer for "Hellcats" and I've gotta say, besides a few cheesy parts, it looks absolutely delicious. Take a peek here!

Wish me luck!

EDIT NOTE: Just talked to Ashley and she is SOOO sweet. A perfect interview, so friendly and had great things to say about cheerleading. She even talked to me briefly about dating. Love her! You're going to have to stay tuned to our next issue to read the whole thing! So giddy right now!

Interview with authors Charity Tahmaseb & Darcy Vance

by Brittany Geragotelis

I read a book recently that was both adorable and fun—and totally spoke to the nerd in me! The book (and the story behind how the book came together) is inspirational and all about doing what you love, believing in yourself and sticking by your friends.

Authors Charity Tahmaseb & Darcy Vance were nice enough to take time out of their busy writing schedules to answer a few questions about life, reading, writing as a duo and getting published!
Me: You two are the brains behind the super-fun book, The Geek Girl's Guide to Cheerleading. Charity, why a cheerleading book?
Charity: I wish I could remember exactly what sparked the idea. I must have been reminiscing about high school, and all of a sudden remembered my time on the cheer squad. I do remember thinking: Maybe that could be a story. And immediately after that, I e-mailed Darcy with my idea. Her response was: “I will either steal your story idea or kick your scrawny cheerleader butt if you don’t write this.” True, Geek Girl did start off as my solo project, but as you can see, Darcy was there all along.

Me: You have a really unique story behind how this book came to fruition. Do you mind sharing it with us?
Darcy:
Sure! Like Charity said, Geek Girl’s Guide was originally her idea, but I loved it from the start. Whenever Charity would get tired of working on it, I’d push her to keep going. I even took a few of her first chapters and rewrote them (a definite no-no in the writing world). I knew she had something special. There was a point where Charity had given up, and nothing I did or said could get her started on it again. Then my 21-year-old son was diagnosed with tongue cancer.
After that first horrible week, I sent Charity a message thanking her for being such a good friend to me. She said she wished she could do more to help me, “…but we live so far apart. It’s not like I can pop down the street and deliver a hot dish to you.” (Charity lives in Minnesota and I’m in Indiana.)

The next day she sent another e-mail asking me to join her in a private online group called “Hotdish.” When I signed in there was a message saying something like, “Remember that story, the one with the cheerleaders? What if we worked on it together?”

Charity knew I needed something else to think about besides my son being sick and needed the money (paying for cancer treatment is expensive). She knew that if we worked together, we might be able to turn Geek Girl’s Guide into a story that a publisher might want to buy. And, if that happened, I could use my part of the money to help pay my son’s doctor bills.

So, in between taking my son to doctors and hospitals, Charity and I worked on the book together. By the time my family found a doctor who could help us, we'd rewritten most of the book. Charity spent the week my son was in the hospital to remove his tumor, writing to agents. My son’s surgery was a success—and so were Charity’s letters. Several agents got in touch with us about our book right away.
The same month that my son’s doctor told us everything was going to be okay, our agent sold The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading! The book was published 11 months later, two years and one week after my son’s diagnosis. He was with me the first day I saw our book in a store and he’s still cancer-free (check out Darcy with her son to the left)!

Me: That’s an incredible story on its own! Are you two planning on teaming up on another book in the future?Darcy: We’re working on a couple of books at the moment, not true sequels, but other “geek girl” types of books. Charity is working on something called Dating on the Dork Side, which as a novel—and social experiment—is still a work in progress.

Me: What’s it like writing a book together? Do you take different chapters, different characters, etc? How do you deal with creative differences along the way?
Charity: We brainstorm in chat sessions (we almost never talk on the phone!) and we each have strengths we bring to the process. I can keep the structure of the story in my head, while Darcy knows when we’ve repeated an unusual word one too many times. She has a feel for characters I can’t get a handle on, and vice versa.
Usually, if we disagree, we can either find a compromise, or one of us will feel more strongly than the other about the item in question. If it’s a big disagreement (and we did have one while writing Geek Girl), we’ll go with whoever has the strength in that area.

courtesy of Darcey Vance
Darcy: There was one point in the novel that we came at from totally opposite directions. We had a pretty tense couple of days. Eventually, I gave in because it was a question about plot—and that’s the area where Charity shines and I really struggle. We agreed to try it her way but if our editor said anything about it, I reserved the right to say “I told you so.” It turned out Charity was right. It also turned out that Charity is much nicer than I am—she never said “I told you so” to me. Not once.
But writing together was an amazing experience. In the beginning, it was easy to tell the parts Charity had written from the parts I’d written. The deeper we got into rewriting the story though, the harder it became to tell us apart. It was like we’d created a third person out of the best of both of us.
Me: How does it feel to see your labor of love on bookshelves and in the hands of teens?
Charity: Awesome. Incredible. Surreal. Even now, it’s a treat to walk into a bookstore or the library and see it there on the shelf. Even more incredible, teens have sent us e-mails letting us know how much they liked the book.

courtesy of Darcey Vance
Me: What inspires you?
Charity:
Music. A great book. Eavesdropping. Seriously, inspiration is everywhere, even when you don’t realize that you’re looking for it. The other day, I spied the cutest teen boy, all decked out in a Snuggie, in the middle of Starbucks. He was happily texting his friends. I know there’s a story in there, somewhere.

Me: What books are you fans of?
Charity:Oh gosh, we’re both big readers and there are tons of books that we love. A favorite of ours is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Some of our favorite modern writers include John Green, E. Lockhart, Sarah Dessen, Maureen Johnson, Suzanne Collins, Elizabeth Scott, Catherine Murdock, Deb Caletti and Stacey Jay—even though she features evil cheerleaders in her latest novel.

Me: What advice would you give others who’d like to write books?

Charity: Butt in chair. Hands on keys. There’s no magic secret to becoming a published author. The only way to do it is to write a book that people want to read. And the only way I know to do that is to write, write, write, and…write!

Me: In your journey to being published, was there ever a time you wanted to give up? How did you push yourself to go on?
Charity: Plenty! In fact, I shelved the Geek Girl manuscript twice before pulling it out a third time to try again. For me, it really helped that Darcy was there all along, believing in my ability. Believing in it so much, that it hurt her when I shelved the project. Of course, what the story needed was both of us, but her steadfast belief in the story is why it’s in bookstores.
Darcy: I loved the story so much and felt so honored that Charity let me be a part of writing it. For me, every minute I spent writing was like a mini-vacation from the scary awfulness of my son’s illness. Writing Geek Girl was what recharged me and made it possible for me to give him the care he needed.

Back from my Disney Adventure

by Brittany Geragotelis

So, part of my job as senior editor at American Cheerleader magazine is traveling to competitions. Working on the weekends (and with no overtime), not so fun. Attending the competitions at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Disney World, awesome! How many people get to say they have to go to Disney World for business?!?! The only downside, is that most of the time on these trips, we're at the Wide World of Sports the entire time and have no time to get to the parks. And for someone who is a HUGE Disney fanatic (I've gone to Disneyland every year since I was 3!), being that close to the magic and not actually getting to experience it is rough.

But this trip was different. My co-worker and I got to Disney on Thursday afternoon and because of the delayed flights of several international teams (those darn volcanos!), the day's ceremonies were canceled. So, we had the entire afternoon off! We were lucky enough to snag a few park hopper passes and headed over to MGM and then to The Magic Kingdom for a little fun. All I gotta say is that Disney truly is the happiest place on earth!

One last thing I wanted to mention about the trip was how good Disney is about their guest's food allergies. I have Celiac Disease, which is an autoimmune disease where my body cannot handle the protein in gluten (wheat, oats, barely & rye). This means I can't eat anything basically with flour in it....pizza, sandwiches, cereal and other things gluten's hidden in, are all off limits to me. It makes it difficult for me to find things to eat sometimes. But Disney's made an incredible effort to include anyone who comes to their parks by offering safe menus for everyone! Everywhere I'd go (even the fast-food joints), I'd tell the cashiers that I needed to eat gluten-free and the chef would come out and talk with me, discuss what they could make me and personally made my meal. And I wasn't just stuck with burgers without the buns or salads w/o the dressings...almost everywhere we went had gf buns, pizza, chicken fingers, etc. Every morning I had gf waffles in the shape of Mickey Mouse—and they were the best waffles I've ever had!

For someone who usually has trouble finding food that's safe to eat, this was a huge deal. So, if you have food allergies, you can rest easy knowing that Disney is more than happy and capable of accommodating you.

Even though the trip was a ton of fun, I'm glad to be home and back to my regular schedule...and back to this blog! Speaking of books...I watched Molly Ringwald on "The Today Show" this morning. I grew up watching her movies (Sixteen Candles was a personal fave! Who didn't dream of the school hottie asking her to the big dance?) and am so excited to see that she has a book out today, called Getting the Pretty Back. It's about growing up and feeling comfortable in your skin. Are you going to get your copy? I know I am!

I'm a total Gleek...

by Brittany Geragotelis

I can't even begin to describe to you how ridiculously excited I am that "Glee" is returning tonight. It feels like it's been forever since we got to watch our favorite Gleeks dance and sing and I for one can't wait to see what they come up with next. I've heard that so much good stuff is in store for the rest of this season:

Anchor Bay
"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon directed episode 19, which I believe is also the same episode that "Doogie Howser" (am I a nerd that I used to LOVE that show?) and "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris appears in. Joss and Neil? That's almost too much goodness in one episode!

I've also heard that Kurt joins the Cheerios this season. Not sure if it's because he likes the poms, or if it's because he's just trying to get closer to the enemy (Coach Sue Syllvester). Either way, I think we're in for a treat! Oh, and there's going to be a whole episode devoted to Madonna!!!! Like a Virgin. Vogue. Papa Don't Preach (this would work well with Quinn's storyline, don't you think?)...I can't wait to see what they choose to use!

Okay, gotta go and calm down before my head explodes from all the awesomeness. If you're a "Glee" fan, too, check out the sectionals episode wrap up below to catch up before tonight's brand new episode. And if you've been living under a rock and simply haven't watched the best show EVER yet, log onto fox and start watching!

Let the Glee be with you!

B.
